What tests are taken before treatment?

Before starting the assessment, we take a wide range of blood tests to ensure your treatment is as effective as possible.

We check blood sugar through fasting glucose and long-term blood sugar (HbA1c). It is common for blood sugar to be elevated in people with overweight, and most people with type 2 diabetes have overweight.

Glucose levels and HbA1c are used to assess the risk of diabetes. Normal fasting glucose is below 6.1 mmol/L. The diagnostic threshold for diabetes mellitus is two fasting glucose values above 7.0 mmol/L. An HbA1c between 42 and 48 mmol/mol is considered elevated. The threshold for diabetes is an HbA1c above 48 mmol/mol. With weight loss, blood sugar and HbA1c often decrease, which can reduce the risk of diabetes.

We also check blood lipids (cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides). Elevated levels or an abnormal lipid profile increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. With weight loss, triglycerides and harmful LDL cholesterol may decrease.

We also assess electrolyte and calcium balance (potassium, sodium, and calcium), liver tests (GT and ALAT), and kidney function tests (creatinine and eGFR).

With weight loss, previously elevated liver values caused by fatty liver disease can often improve and normalize.

Metabolic disorders are very common. In Sweden, around one million people take thyroid hormone. A deficiency in thyroid hormone can lead to fatigue and sometimes weight gain. We check the pituitary hormone TSH and the metabolic hormone free T4 (thyroxine) to ensure levels are normal.

We also assess blood count values, including hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell size (MCV, MCH), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). These tests are often taken together and referred to as a complete blood count. Elevated Hb levels are sometimes seen in overweight and sleep apnea. In blood disorders, iron deficiency, and bleeding, Hb levels decrease.

Iron deficiency is common, so we also check ferritin levels. We also assess whether you have deficiencies in other important vitamins such as B12 (cobalamin) and folate, which are important for blood formation and the nervous system.

Yazen also offers a home testing option for those who cannot or do not wish to have samples taken on site. You receive a test kit by mail and can collect the samples at home at your own pace. You then send the samples in for analysis.

Due to technical limitations, the home test cannot analyze as many values as comprehensive laboratory testing. The home test includes analysis of:

  • Long-term blood sugar (HbA1c)
  • Kidney values (creatinine and eGFR)
  • Liver tests (ALAT and gamma-GT)
  • Blood lipids (triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and LDL/HDL ratio)

Although not all tests are included, the home test still provides an overview of key blood values.

To change the sampling location or to get more information about the home test, please contact your responsible doctor directly in the app. They will assist you based on your needs.

How do the new weight loss medications work?

The medication works both locally in the stomach and centrally in the brain. It affects satiety, hunger, and appetite through several mechanisms, both directly and indirectly.

The stomach empties more slowly, which leads to an earlier feeling of fullness when you eat. You feel satisfied sooner and eat smaller portions.

In the brain, the medication influences several processes that together reduce hunger and cravings while increasing satiety and lowering appetite. Some patients describe that a so-called “food noise” becomes quieter. They experience thinking about food less than before, which makes it easier not to eat more than needed.

Do I get a diet and training plan?

During treatment, you receive support tailored to your needs from your YazenCoach.

If needed, the coach can also help you with individually tailored diet and training guidance, so that you reach your goals in a sustainable way.

How does payment work?

We use Stripe as our payment service to manage subscriptions. You can easily pay with your debit or credit card, and depending on the country, you may also be able to choose other payment options. The subscription is charged one month in advance. Payment is automatically deducted each month on the same date as your first payment.

For example, if you paid on September 26, the next payment will be charged on October 26. If you wish to change the payment date, you are welcome to contact our support team.

We also offer the option to pay a one-time amount for either a 6- or 12-month subscription via Klarna. For ongoing monthly payments, card payment via Stripe is used.

How long does it take to lose weight with Yazen’s treatment?

The rate of weight loss is individual and depends on several factors. Each person’s circumstances and starting point are different.

The treatment team aims to support you as a patient in losing 5 % of your body weight during the first 12 weeks, while of course listening to you and your preferences. Our internal follow-up shows that our patients reach an average weight loss of 5 % within 70 days, and on a group level our patients achieve 16 % to 18 % weight loss over 12 months. How long it takes for you to reach your target weight or a healthy target weight is naturally individual.

Your coach and doctor tailor the treatment to you, ensuring a healthy rate of weight loss where behavior change and lifestyle change are just as important as medical support with medication, for sustainable results.

We have experience helping more than 50,000 patients lose weight and maintain a healthy target weight. Modern medications provide revolutionary conditions for maintaining an energy deficit to support weight loss.

For your weight journey to be sustainable for life, medication combined with lifestyle changes is crucial. We are here to support you throughout your weight journey.

The treatment

How much weight will I lose?

This is individual. You set a target weight. Your coach and doctor are here to support you and ensure that weight loss and treatment follow-up are carried out in a safe and patient-focused way.

The treatment

How does treatment for overweight affect my other medications?

The medication causes delayed gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of, for example, oral contraceptives in the stomach. Therefore, we recommend barrier contraception, such as condoms, to prevent unintended pregnancy. You should not become pregnant during ongoing treatment with GLP-1/GIP analogues.

If you have diabetes and are treated with insulin, GLP-1 analogues may cause low blood sugar levels. We do not treat individuals with diabetes who are on insulin therapy or older so-called SU medications due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking. Your doctor is responsible for assessing whether you can use modern appetite-regulating medications in a patient-safe manner.

I have PCOS, can I undergo treatment with Yazen?

In cases of overweight and obesity, weight loss with medical treatment is an important treatment option for PCOS. It can contribute to improved hormonal balance, reduced inflammation, fewer symptoms, and an increased chance of pregnancy.

The treatment

What is included in the subscription?

We strive for full transparency regarding our costs. Subscriptions and medication are paid separately, and medication is not included in the subscription fee.

Blood tests included in Change are covered by the subscription price. For Clarity, blood tests may be performed when needed but are not included in the subscription fee.

Can you eat normally during medical treatment?

The goal of the treatment is for you to plan your diet so that it is well-balanced, nutritious, filling, and low in energy in order to achieve an energy deficit.

Energy deficit = calorie deficit is a prerequisite for weight loss.

How, what, and when you eat during the day can also affect whether you experience side effects. If you have questions about how to plan your meals, seek support from your coach.

Medication

Can you cancel your subscription at any time?

At Yazen, there are two different subscriptions: Change and Clarity.

For Change, you can choose a binding period of 1, 6, or 12 months. The subscription can only be cancelled once the binding period has ended, and you must always speak with your doctor before cancellation, as the doctor is responsible for your treatment.

In addition, Yazen’s prescription policy applies. This means that each time you are prescribed medication, you commit to remaining in the service for the entire treatment period for that medication. This corresponds to 4 weeks per pen or package – regardless of the binding period of your subscription. The reason is that GLP-1 medications require careful dosing, monitoring of effects and side effects, and medical planning. For patient safety reasons, we therefore cannot end your membership immediately after a prescription has been issued.

For Clarity, the prescription policy does not apply. Here, cancellation is governed solely by the binding period of each service:

Yazen app: no binding period

Prescription renewal: 3-month binding period

Coaching support: 1-month binding period

Personal physician: 3-month binding period

I have previously undergone a gastric bypass surgery. Does your treatment work for me?

We treat many patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery.

Regaining weight after such surgery can feel even more shameful than the first time for many people, but the same biological and external mechanisms are responsible for weight gain both before and after surgery. This is about genetics and environmental factors, not personal failure. Yazen’s treatment is designed to help you regardless of your medical history.

Obesity is a complex and chronic disease, which explains why weight regain can occur after weight loss following surgery. You are not alone in this. It is not your fault. The disease has a complex causal model, and we have experience helping individuals achieve and maintain weight loss.

The treatment

Do I need to take obesity medication for the rest of my life?

Obesity is a chronic and complex disease. Research shows that individuals who stop taking medication tend to regain weight. The theory behind this is that there is a so-called “set point” in the brain, which acts like a thermostat in the hypothalamus and monitors body weight. When you lose weight, this thermostat increases hunger and appetite in order to restore the weight to the higher level you previously had.

From an evolutionary perspective, humans are adapted to avoid starvation and survive in a very different environment than the one we often live in today. The reasons why an individual develops obesity are multifactorial, and therefore the measures required to lose weight and maintain weight loss vary from person to person.

We advise patients not to stop taking medication once they have reached their target weight. Instead, we recommend trying a lower dose, known as a maintenance dose, which helps prevent weight regain. More research is needed before we know who may be able to discontinue medication a certain number of years after achieving stable weight at a healthy level.

Medication

What side effects can occur from the medication?

Side effects are usually few, mild, and temporary. The most common side effects affect the gastrointestinal tract, such as nausea, gas, abdominal discomfort, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea.

Side effects can often be avoided by starting treatment at a low dose and by adjusting meal content and portion size. Always inform your doctor or coach if you experience side effects so that you can receive advice and support.

Medication

What does my YazenCoach do?

Your YazenCoach is a licensed nurse, dietitian, or physiotherapist with experience in obesity treatment.

Your YazenCoach provides you with personal support throughout your weight journey, tailored to your individual needs. You receive support in implementing behaviour changes. You can get help planning a calorie deficit based on your needs. Your coach also supports you if you face challenges, whether related to diet, physical activity, or mental well-being.

The treatment

What happens when I have reached a healthy target weight?

When you have reached a healthy target weight, you begin determining a maintenance dose. This is the dose of medication you need to remain weight stable, i.e. to stay in energy balance. The maintenance dose is your medical support to prevent weight regain. Research shows that individuals who stop taking medication tend to regain weight. At present, we do not know how long each individual will need to continue medication – for many, it may potentially be lifelong.

The treatment

What do you do if someone does not lose enough weight or loses weight too slowly?

If you, as a patient, do not reach your goals, your team is there to explore potential obstacles together with you.

You receive continuous support, tailored to your needs. Challenges or setbacks during a weight journey are not uncommon. The treatment is likely to be long-term, and it is natural to experience periods that are more challenging.

Your team has experience in helping individuals with obesity overcome existing barriers. There are described cases in which individuals do not achieve the desired effect from modern appetite-regulating medications, but in our experience this is very rare.

The treatment

Which medications does Yazen use for weight loss?

Your doctor most often prescribes modern appetite-regulating medications, known as GLP-1/GIP analogues.

The doctor always makes an individual assessment. There are several approved medications that may be appropriate.
